UKRAINIAN VILLAGE — After driving into a fence, a man jumped out of his car, stripped naked and marched down the street, stomping his feet and screaming "I don't give a f---" at police and passersby, according to people who witnessed the odd spectacle Friday.
In a video posted to Facebook (Warning: Video depicts nudity and swearing), it appears the man was stomping and wildly swinging his arms as cars zoomed by on Chicago Avenue for a few minutes before police arrived and detained him.
James Nicky, a Ukrainian Village resident, and his wife watched several cops as they encircled "a completely naked man in the middle of the street" at the Chicago and Campbell avenues intersection, just west of Western, around noon on Friday.
"There was about four cops just sort of surrounding him. He was stomping his feet and saying, 'I don't give a f---. I don't give a f---,'" Nicky said.
Nicky said that man was "sweating profusely" and while the photo Nicky snapped looks like the man is trying to start a fight, in actuality the man was "not too aggressive" and it never looked like it got violent.
The only violence the man displayed was when he pounded his arm on the hood of a car that was stalled in traffic. Both lanes of Chicago Avenue west of Western were closed off during the incident.
Prior to being on the street, the man had crashed his SUV into the fence of the CVS parking lot, 2427 W. Chicago Ave., and when approached by someone to see if he was okay, got out of the car, stripped and began running up and down Chicago Avenue, according to a resident who posted about the incident in the Ukrainian Village Neighborhood Watch Facebook group.
After getting coffee at Dark Matter, around the corner at 738 N. Westen Ave., Nicky said the man was still there on their way back.
"He was still on the ground. They put him on a stretcher," he said.
A Facebook user named George Rivera captured a video of the entire incident. "The police handled this situation and man well. No tasers, batons or excessive force used, no choking or knees on neck. Police did an awesome job here no one hurt or injured," Rivera posted.
In an e-mail, Chicago Police confirmed that officers responded to a car accident and disturbance in the 2500 block of West Chicago Avenue, in which a "highly agitated and naked" 37-year-old man was striking vehicles and blocking traffic.
Police said he was taken into custody and taken to Mt. Sinai hospital, where he was treated for evaluation and released. Charges are pending, police said.
