Andrea Swalec is a News Editor for DNAinfo. She has previously served as a reporter/producer covering Greenwich Village and SoHo.

Before joining DNAinfo she worked as a news editor for NBC and a producer for WNYC Radio.

Andrea has a master's in multimedia journalism from CUNY's Graduate School of Journalism. While in grad school, she covered the European Union as an intern for Reuters in Brussels and contributed to the New York Times's blog The Local, covering Fort Greene and Clinton Hill. A multimedia story she wrote for The Local about two families' long history in a building destroyed by a fire won her a Society of Professional Journalists award for online news reporting.

Before the journalism light bulb went off in her head, Andrea coordinated vocational training programs for unemployed youth in Egypt and Morocco with the Education For Employment Foundation in Washington, D.C.

Andrea grew up in a suburb of Detroit and graduated from Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Mich., where she studied writing. She lived in Senegal and Japan while in college and was then a Fulbright scholar to Morocco, where she studied Arabic.

Fun Fact: Displaying the Michigan hand is the way to Andrea's heart. #MittensUp!
