MANHATTAN — Perfectly timed with the start of spring, the beloved hawks of Washington Square Park are nesting with three eggs and they've chosen NYU President John Sexton's windowsill as their roosting spot for the third year in a row.
The red-tailed hawks, which doting fans named Rosie and Bobby, have again built a nest on Sexton's 12th-floor windowsill on Washington Square South, NYU spokesman John Beckman said Wednesday afternoon.
The New York Times will not host the popular Hawk Cam this year, a spokeswoman said, but NYU has opted to carry on the tradition due to popular demand.
With equipment lent by the Times, the university has set up a webcam so bird fans will soon be able to watch the hawks around the clock.
“We have been in touch with some of the stalwart members of the online community that have followed the hawks, and we’ll be working with them over the coming days to let the broader community of hawk cam watchers know when we are ready to start the streaming video, which should be soon," Beckman said.
"We know people are eager for the hawk cam to resume, and we’re glad to be able to be responsive.”
Bobby mated with Rosie after his previous mate, Violet, died of an apparent heart attack following surgery in December 2011, as DNAinfo.com New York first reported.
Rosie's spawn hatched on camera in April 2012. Fans named the chicks Boo and Scout.
