FORT GREENE — An NYPD officer shot and injured a 20-year-old man who investigators say was armed and jumping a fence Friday at the Walt Whitman Houses, according to police.

Officers were on patrol in a marked police van at 7:55 p.m. when they heard shots fired in the area of Park Avenue and Cumberland Walk, NYPD officials said.

The officers got out of the van and headed toward Park Avenue to investigate. There, they saw an armed man running and jumping a fence near 75 Cumberland Walk, police said.

As the officers approached the suspect, one of them shot him in the left shoulder.

The suspect, whose name has not been released by police, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition and placed in police custody.

The officers were taken to Methodist Hospital for treatment and observation, police said, though the NYPD offered no details on their injuries.

Police said they found a Kel Tec 9mm semi-automatic handgun at the scene.

Charges against the wounded suspect are pending, according to police.
