ROCKAWAY PARK — Police shot a knife-wielding man in the leg inside a Queens apartment building Tuesday afternoon after he repeatedly stabbed his sister, the NYPD said.

Police responded to an assault in progress inside 103-00 Shore Front Parkway, between Beach 102nd and Beach 105th streets, around noon and found the 32-year-old sister laying on the grass in back of the building with knife wounds to her body, NYPD Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan said.

The officers were then directed inside the building's first-floor hallway, where they encountered the 34-year-old brother with the weapon in hand, Monahan said.

"The officers gave repeated commands to drop the knife, and the suspect did not comply," he said. "The officers deployed three separate tasers, and they had no effect on the male. The suspect, still armed, advanced forward and one officer discharged his weapon, striking the suspect once in the right leg.”

The suspect, whose name wasn't immediately released, and his sister were taken to Jamaica Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the NYPD.

He has an extensive psychiatric history and was released on Friday from Rikers Island, where he had been held on assault charges. He had also spent time at Creedmoor Psychiatric Center, Monahan said.

It wasn't immediately clear what he and his sister were arguing about, but Monahan said their mother chased both of them out of the apartment before the attack took place.

The knife was recovered at the scene, authorities said.

An NYPD officer was taken to North Shore Hospital for ringing of the ears, the NYPD said.
