News Editor @JulieShapiro Contact

Julie Shapiro is a News Editor at DNAinfo, managing coverage of the southern half of Manhattan.

Before joining the editing team at DNAinfo in 2012, Julie covered Lower Manhattan for five years, breaking stories on Occupy Wall Street, the so-called Ground Zero Mosque and the post-9/11 recovery Downtown.

She previously worked for weekly newspaper Downtown Express, where she won New York Press Association awards for her coverage of school overcrowding and the response of New York's Haitian community to the 2010 earthquake.

Julie has not dreamed of becoming a journalist since she was a child — in fact, she spent her college years at Drew University studying math. But fate and a dislike of typos propelled her to join The Acorn, the school's student newspaper. She hasn’t looked back since.

Julie lives in Prospect Heights, where you can often find her at Ample Hills Creamery and Unnameable Books.

Fun Fact: Julie hates going to the gym so much that she often resorts to jogging in place in her apartment. Her downstairs neighbors haven't complained — yet.
