CLINTON HILL — A woman was scammed out of nearly $10,000 by a fraudster claiming to be her friend in need of bail money, police said.
The episode unfolded on Oct. 21, 2016, when the man called the woman, 66, who lives near Clinton and Lafayette avenues, police said.
He pretended to be a friend and told her he was in custody and in need of $9,500 in cash, the NYPD said.
After she agreed to help him out, a man arrived in a green four-door sedan and collected the money, police said.
After he left, the woman received another call asking for more cash. When she grew suspicious, she called her friend directly and found out he hadn’t been arrested, the NYPD said.
It’s unclear why the sketch was just released.
The man who collected the money is described as about 25 to 30 years old with a slim build.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
