FORT GREENE — This year’s free Black History Month events along Myrtle Avenue will include spoken word, interactive dance performances and video pieces focused on healing and resistance.

Black Artstory Month” is back for the fifth year in a row, bringing free cultural events and art exhibitions to Myrtle Avenue each Friday in February during Black History Month.

Hosted by the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership, the series features performances, talks, film screenings and public art exhibitions by African-American artists.

Work from local artists will also be on display in storefronts along the thoroughfare during the month.

This year’s theme is "The Altar: Rituals of Healing in the African Diaspora,” which will explore various healing rituals and traditions.

“This long legacy of healing practices are by their very existence acts of resistance, aimed at regaining equilibrium and maintaining wellness for community, family and self in the face of social structures and societal trauma,” curator Suhaly Bautista-Carolina said in a statement.

“This year, artists’ interpretations of the theme speak truths about our intentions in the world.”
