DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — Legends never die, and Downtown Brooklyn has quite a few.

The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership is celebrating its 10th anniversary by calling on local artists to create pieces that tell the story of 10 neighborhood “legends," or iconic spots and well-known figures in the area.

The local development organization will choose 20 artists, two for each legendary person or place, to create a work of art that will go on display in December.

Artists have until Sept. 9 to apply to create a piece of art inspired by one of the legends: Junior’s Restaurant, Westinghouse High School, Fulton Mall, Gage & Tollner Restaurant, chef Edna Lewis, Beat Street Records, Albee Square, Dime Savings Bank, Vaudeville theaters and the Fulton Street elevated line.

The winning artists will be announced on Sept. 13 and have until November to create their artwork.

The work will go on display at a local gallery from mid-December through the end of the year. A final location for the exhibit has not been chosen, according to a partnership spokeswoman.
