BOERUM HILL — Arts and craft giant Michaels has opened its new Brooklyn store in Boerum Hill.

The shop, located at 252 Atlantic Ave. near Boerum Place, opened March 25, according to a store employee.

Michaels, founded in 1973 in Texas, sells everything from photo frames and candles to buttons, sequins, knitting products and all kinds of art supplies. According to its website, it is the largest arts and craft specialty retailer in North America.

The store's public relations team did not respond to requests for comment about its Brooklyn debut.

After years of construction delays, the new two-story building, which replaced a gas station, finally topped out last May.

While the surrounding neighborhoods are still home to several local mom-and-pop shops and restaurants, nearby Smith and Court streets have seen a surge in the opening of chain stores and high-end boutiques in recent years, such as Splendid, Rituals, Jacadi, Lululemon and Rag & Bone.

Just a few blocks away from the new Michaels, eyewear store Warby Parker will open its first Brooklyn location, joining Australian skincare brand Aesop, handbag designer Clare V. and French perfumer Diptyque.

The area's retail rents are also among the highest in the borough, one report found last year.

While crafty Brooklynites might be cheering the shop's opening, some locals were confused by its location in the neighborhood, Brooklyn Paper reported in November.

The Boerum Hill location will be open Mondays through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Michaels has at least two other New York City locations in Manhattan and in Queens.
