BROOKLYN NAVY YARD — Steiner Studios is planning to expand by adding a new 179,000-square-foot building on its Brooklyn Navy Yard lot.

The film production studio, the largest in the U.S. outside of Hollywood, wants to add a three-story building that will house six new soundstages along Kent Avenue, according to a permit application filed with the Department of Buildings.

It was first reported by The Real Deal.

Steiner is working with Dattner Architects in designing the new building, according to the DOB documents.

The property would feature workshop space and a cafeteria on the first floor, dressing rooms, hair and makeup rooms and wardrobe storage on the second floor, and production offices and a dimmer room for the studio’s lighting on the third floor, according to the permit application.

The 580,000-square-foot Steiner lot, which opened in 2004, currently holds ten soundstages totaling 131,000 square feet. It’s also home to the largest stage on the East Coast, according to the Steiner Studios website.

The lot also houses the city’s first public graduate-level film school, the Barry R. Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema, which opened this fall.
