DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — A woman was critically injured Wednesday morning when a car struck her as she tried to cross Flatbush Avenue, officials said.

The driver, Shantay Burgos, 23, of Norfolk, Va., was arrested at the scene and charged with driving with a suspended license, police said.

The accident happened about noon as the unidentified 34-year-old woman and a man were crossing west over Flatbush Avenue Extension at Gold Street and a northbound Nissan Sentra with Virginia plates struck her, according to witnesses and officials.

The two stepped into the crosswalk against the light, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

"These two started to cross. One stepped back, the other kept going. He yelled, 'Look out!' She turned around and that's when the car hit her," said witness Tyler Lyle, 30.

"It was a loud thud. Her body was on the windshield. Then she fell off the car. She was on her back. There was a lot of blood.

"The guy was freaking out. He was beside himself," Lyle said.

The woman suffered severe serious head injuries and was taken to Methodist Hospital in critical condition, FDNY and NYPD officials said.

"I saw her getting taken into the ambulance. She was on a stretcher. She was in the fetal position, all crawled up. She wasn't moving," said Josh Cormier, 22, a local chef.

The NYPD was continuing to investigate, officials said.
