QUEENS — A Queens corner will soon be named after a police officer who was shot and killed by an ex-con while patrolling the streets of Queens Village.
The intersection of 222nd Street and 92nd Road, where the 105th Precinct is located, will soon be co-named “Detective 1st Grade Brian Moore Way.”
Moore, 25, a five-year veteran, was on patrol in an unmarked police car on May 2, near 212th Street and 104th Avenue when he was shot by 35-year-old Demetrius Blackwell with an illegal handgun, police said. He died two days later at Jamaica Hospital.
Moore was posthumously promoted to detective first grade.
The City Council voted to change the name of the street more than a dozen blocks away from where Moore was shot last month. Mayor Bill de Blasio signed it into law Monday.
The office of Councilman Daneek Miller, who represents Queens Village, said that the date for the official renaming ceremony has not yet been decided and will be chosen after consultation with the detective's family and the 105th Precinct, where Moore was assigned.
"He gave his life to protect the residents of our City and the District I represent in Southeast Queens," said Councilman Miller during Monday's ceremony at City Hall. "While we cannot offer or dedicate any monument to sufficiently commemorate his sacrifice we will seek to memorialize it in this way."
