DUMBO — Brooklyn Bridge Park will celebrate its newest parkland in DUMBO next month with a festival featuring family activities, games and food.

The DUMBO Family Fest, scheduled for Aug. 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the John Street and Main Street sections of the park, will give the public its first chance to check out the waterfront park's newest sections.

"This is the perfect time to celebrate the latest addition to Brooklyn Bridge Park," Regina Myer, president of Brooklyn Bridge Park said in a statement announcing the festival.

The new green space will not officially open until construction is complete later this summer, according to Myer and Natalie Garcia, spokeswoman for the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy.

The new John Street waterfront parkland will include pedestrian bridges and a 13,000 square-foot lawn. The Main Street park will also have an expanded lawn, an elevated granite plaza and an upgraded dog run, among other features. A new area will also open near Pier 6 and the Atlantic Avenue end of the park.

But even as Brooklyn Bridge Park celebrates its new spaces, some locals continue to push back against the condo developments that are slated to rise in the park property. A public hearing for proposed towers at Pier 6 will be held Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights.
