FORT GREENE — The owners and staff at Colonia Verde are trying to rebuild after a recent fire caused major damage to the restaurant's kitchen area.

The eatery, at 219 DeKalb Ave., is currently shuttered for repairs but co-owner Tamy Rofe expects to reopen the doors in just a few weeks.

Meanwhile Rofe is encouraging customers to visit their sister restaurant, Cómodo, at 58 Macdougal St., to support displaced staff who will be working at the location while repairs are made.

"We are going to get back up after this fire; it's a matter of putting all of our efforts into rebuilding and supporting our staff during the transition," she said. "We are hopeful that Colonia Verde will reopen soon."

The restaurant had a packed house Saturday night when a fire broke out in the kitchen area around 9 p.m. It is unclear what caused the fire, the FDNY said.

Patrons were escorted from the eatery and no one was hurt, according to the FDNY. Many stopped by the next day to see how the restaurant was doing and offered to settle up their bills.

"We have been in Fort Greene for a year now and really feel like we have made a home here," Rofe said. "Everyone has been so supportive and warm."

Colonia Verde serves Latin American cuisine inspired cuisine such as grilled Colombian-style arepas and duck confit tacos. They also host $15 steak nights, pig roasts and brunch specials.
