Fort Greene Designer's Mismatched Sock Line Lures Stars Like Amy Sedaris

FORT GREENE — Five years ago, self-proclaimed "child-at-heart" Hannah Lavon was fed up with the lack of fun apparel for adults.

So she decided to take matters into her own hands, creating colorful, mismatched mittens in styles like Cat vs. Dog, T-Rex vs. Triceratops, or Shark vs. Penguin.

Lavon's first line of mittens, created in a row house on Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene, immediately sold out and caught the eye of Academy Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway — who wears the Wolf vs. Sheep mittens.

Five years later, Lavon is expanding her empire — named Vs. Stuff —  to include socks. She said it's perfect for those who want to wear a dragon on one foot and a unicorn on the other.

"You can take a break from work and make them battle it out under your desk," she said.

The socks are beloved by stars including actress, author and comedian Amy Sedaris, who vowed to use Lavon's Dragon Vs. Unicorns socks "to stuff her bra or put bird feed in them and hang them as bird feeders."

Lavon also has a line of socks for kids.

"Our best sellers for the little ones are the T-Rex vs. Triceratops," she said.

Lavon, who was a freelance art director for advertising companies, thought the concept of mittens and socks that come as rival pairs was fun, lighthearted and played well into a "geek mentality."

"Some people dislike mismatched socks because they look sloppy," she said. "My designs are probably not for them."

Socks cost from $9 to $15.
