DUMBO — This urban fitness trail promises to be challenging for the body and easy on the eyes.

The DUMBO Business Improvement District is looking for a design team to create a temporary one-mile outdoor fitness loop — complete with workout equipment such as chin-up bars and sit-up benches — that winds through historic Cadman Plaza and under the picturesque Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.

The winning design may also include colorful signage with fitness instruction, creative surface treatment, and mapping to help visitors.

“We want to give New York a free outdoor workout – in true DUMBO style,” said DUMBO BID director Alexandria Sica in a statement. “We are excited to see what the design community creates. We want to create a real attraction for the tens of thousands of daily runners and cyclists heading home into Brooklyn over the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges."

The BID partnered with design association AIGA/NY, NYC Parks Department and NYC Small Business Services to seek qualified designers who will have $40,000 to spend on planning, production and installation.

Proposals are due April 18, winners will be chosen June 2 and the project will be installed during August 2014. The "pop-up" trail will remain for one year.
