DUMBO — The NY Waterway is giving riders a little culture with their commute.

This summer East River Ferries will double as art galleries, displaying photographs by a rotating array of talented photographers as part of the Drawn to Water series, which opened on May 13 and will be on display until June when a new exhibit is set to take over.

“Through the lens of talented photographers, East River Ferry passengers will travel a world connected, dominated, and defined by water,” show curator Laura Roumanos said in a statement.

Currently on display is Stephen Mallon's exhibit entitled Next Stop: Atlantic captures the dumping of some 2,500 obsolete subway trains into the Atlantic Ocean. In 2001 the Metropolitan Transportation Authority founded the reefing program where old subway cars were discarded into the sea to create artificial reefs for the fauna below.

Mallon tagged along for two years recording the sinking subway trains. His photos are now on show floating in the East River Ferry.

National Geographic photographer David Doubilet's photos of sea creatures and Joni Sternbach of the International Center of Photography's SurfLand round out the exhibit.

The East River Ferry photo installations were curated by DUMBO's United Photo Industries and ferries carrying the photo exhibitions will operate weekdays from 6:40 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. through the summer.
