Arthur Wood Granted Two More Weeks Before Eviction From Broken Angel House

By Janet Upadhye | March 15, 2013 2:25pm

CLINTON HILL — The Brooklyn Housing Court granted local artist Arthur Wood 15 more days in his home of 30 years. The 84-year-old's new eviction date is set for March 31.

Wood, hopeful for the chance to avoid eviction altogether, was somewhat relieved at the small victory. Though he was still very hurt, according to his close friend Tyler A. Chase, who was with him in court.

"He has been beaten down by this process," she said. "He just wants to be heard and allowed to stay in his home."

Wood has been fighting eviction from the building he bought in 1979 for over a year. The house, dubbed Broken Angel House, was foreclosed after a 2006 fire. Earlier this year its new owner put the Downing Street house on the market for $4.5 million dollars calling it an “amazing conversion opportunity in Clinton Hill,” according to Brownstoner.

Friday night, friends, family and supporters are hosting a block party in honor of the beloved artist complete with barbecue, bands and dancing. They also hope to raise money to help fight the eviction.

"Arthur is down but not broken," Chase said. "Ultimately he is a triumphant fighter who deserves our admiration."

Chase is circulating a petition demanding "an immediate stop to the eviction proceeding against Mr. Arthur N. Wood from his iconic building of thirty years, called the Broken Angel."

"It ain't over 'til it's over," she said.
