CLINTON HILL — The city just avoided a big stinking mess.
Workers are replacing an 1860s clay sewer pipe on Washington Avenue in Clinton Hill, after discovering that it was damaged.
The city tested the aging pipe after local resident Matthew Holota complained that his toilet was regularly overflowing, flooding his basement-level apartment with water, the New York Times blog reported.
Holota told the Times that it took several complaints and calls to local politicians for the city to address the problem.
The Department of Environmental Protection sent workers to begin replacing the pipe in early February, and the construction is expected to last for weeks, workers said.
Washington Avenue between Park and Myrtle avenues will be closed to traffic for the duration of the repairs.
