Doggy Beer Served at Fort Greene's Canine Happy Hour

By Janet Upadhye | August 15, 2012 1:49pm

FORT GREENE — Who's Your Doggy hosted their first Happy Hour for dogs Tuesday night and it was such a success that they want to make it a monthly affair.

Outside on the corner of Willoughby Avenue and Adelphi Street, canines (accompanied by their humans) came by the dozens to partake in unlimited amounts of peanut butter dog treats, doggy turkey cassoulet, and beer. Yes, beer. But this kind is non-alcoholic, made from beef broth, and is especially for dogs.

But it is no less addicting than regular beer, according to Who's Your Doggy store employee, Elizabeth Salden.

"Malcolm, my mini pinscher, kept sneaking drinks out of the sample bowl," she said. "He must have gone overboard because later he peed on the store floor."

Malcolm wasn't the only one having a little too much fun at Happy Hour. A little pug named Scout had a few sips of beer, some treats, and lots of excitement. After Happy Hour he went to a sleepover at his dogwalker, David Robinson's house.

"He literally walked in and passed out," said Robinson. "That's not normal for him, the excitement was too much."

Happy Hour wasn't only for dogs, people could partake too. There was wine, beer, burgers donated from Burger Ur Way, and baked good from new bakery Le Petit.

"It was a way to bring the neighbors out and have the chance to socialize with their dogs," said Salden. "And it's not strictly for dogs, cats are more than welcome to come too."

Though Bella, the store cat, was the only feline to show this time around.
