MANHATTAN — A former acting capo in the Genovese crime family pleaded guilty Monday to conspiracy to commit murder, earning him up to 10 years in prison, the FBI said in a statement.

Anthony "Tony D." Palumbo admitted to planning the murder of a Russian hit man in the early 90s, though Palumbo's higher-ups refused to authorize the killing, and it was never carried out, according to the bureau.

Palumbo, 61, ran a variety of the family's rackets including gambling, loansharking and extortion, the FBI said.

He had been overseeing the extortion of an illegal Russian oil cartel when he and others agreed to the slaying, the bureau said. The hit was requested by the Russian hit man's own employers, according to the FBI.

In exchange for Palumbo's plea, prosecutors will not pursue charges relating to the Bronx murder of fellow mobster, Angelo Sangiuolo, the New York Daily News reported.
