Trouble in Gotham: crime roundup

Critics of the Civilian Complaint Review Board say the police-monitoring agency is weak and irrelevant, and needs reform. Critics said the NYPD rejects 40 percent of the complaints found to be substantiated by the board.[NYTimes.com*registration may be required]

The city is using $24 million in federal grants to expand its network of cameras and weapons sensors from Lower Manhattan to parts of Midtown, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Sunday. [NYTimes.com*registration may be required]

Federal agents said they seized drugs and an illegal stung gun in a raid last month on a construction union allegedly infiltrated by the mob. The drugs found at the District Council of Carpenters allegedly included OxyContin. [NYDailyNews.com]

An aspiring boxer was stabbed to death by two men yesterday on the Upper East Side. The 19-year-old victim, Omar Gaspar, was attacked after leaving a party on East 75th Street, police said. [NYPost.com]

 Former Giants star Plaxico Burress is reportedly being kept in protective custody at Oneida Correctional Facility so he won't be hassled by other inmates. The only time he sees other prisoners is during visitng hours, and even then guards take special precautions. [NYPost.com]
