DA to Oppose Manny Stax Bail Ruling

MANHATTAN SUPREME COURT — Prosecutors plan to challenge an appellate court ruling overturning the bail status of accused killer and club promoter Manuel Pinero, they said Wednesday.

Pinero, 41, who goes by his nickname "Manny Stax," was charged with the fatal stabbing of Christopher Adames outside the Juliet Supperclub in September and had been ordered held without bail by an arraignment judge and a Manhattan Supreme Court justice.

Despite the severity of the charges, Associate Justice David Saxe granted Pinero bail in the amount of $500,000 cash or a $1 million bond on Dec. 16. He has not yet posted bail and friends and family are trying to put the money together, his lawyer said.

Prosecutors say they plan to challenge the bail reversal and request Pinero be held without bail, a move they plan to make in the first week of January.

The DA's office argued that Pinero had the means to flee if he were to be release. They said he had a $1.3 million home in New Jersey and two luxury cars as part of their case to hold him without bail.

But Pinero's attorney say he does not have nearly as much money as they described and that one of the cars was sold six months before the incident.

Pinero was on the run for several days after the September stabbing, before turning himself in on Sept. 28.
