BROOKLYN — A repeat sex offender was sentenced to up to life in prison for raping a 64-year-old woman in her Brownsville apartment after offering to help her carry a plant inside, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office announced Tuesday.

Darrell Kinard, 31, of Claremont Village in The Bronx, was on parole for rape when he sexually assaulted the 64-year-old woman several times in her home in 2015, according to state records and the DA’s office.

“This defendant is a repeat sexual offender who is clearly a danger to society,” acting Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez said in a statement. “This depraved, brutal and calculated attack on a senior citizen in the sanctity of her home justifies the lengthy sentence he received today.”

Kinard waited in the lobby of the victim’s building before offering to help her with the plant. Once inside her home he raped her multiple times, then when she locked herself in her bathroom, he broke down the door and forced her to bathe and wash her sheets and clothing.

The victim suffered a bruised and swollen lip and went to the hospital where a rape kit was administered, prosecutors said. Officials connected Kinard to the crime through a DNA match from the kit, they said.

He was arrested five months later and charged with predatory sexual assault and burglary as sexually motivated felony.

He was convicted by a jury in March and sentenced by Judge Vincent Del Giudice on Tuesday to 65 years to life in prison.

Kinard also sexually assaulted a 38-year-old woman in 2007 and was sentenced to five years in prison, according to state records.

His lawyer was not immediately available for comment.
