Local headlines and events that may be of interest to residents of Red Hook and nearby neighborhoods for the week ahead:

DUMBO is getting 7-foot deployable flood barriers to prevent damage from another Sandy. (NY Times)

► LICH work shuts down after wood blows across the street in high winds, damaging windows and a car. (Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

After several days of water bubbling up from a crack in Van Brunt Street, Department of Environmental Protection crews dug up part of the street and repaired the leak Thursday. The leak, between Sullivan and Wolcott streets, is along the proposed route for the Brooklyn Queens Connector streetcar.

Work is progressing at 225 Smith St., where Books Are Magic independent bookstore will open in spring. (@booksaremagicbk)

Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez's guest last week at the president's speech to Congress was Hameed Darweesh, an Iraqi immigrant who worked with the United States military for a decade and then got caught up in the first round of detentions at JFK Airport in January. 

► Dine In Brooklyn restaurant week is coming up March 20 through 30. Nearby restaurants taking part include Mazzat on Columbia Street; Marco Polo Ristorante on Court Street; Provence en Boite and Nightingale Nine on Smith Street; Hill Country Barbecue Market on Adams Street; Armando’s, Pinto, Heights Cafe, and Friend of a Farmer on Montague Street. 

On Tuesday evening, New York RoadRunners hosts a free open run, starting at 7 p.m. at the Pier 6 end of Brooklyn Bridge Park. It’s an all-ages event, and strollers and dogs on leashes are welcome. 

► Community Board 6 will hold its general board meeting Wednesday but the agenda hasn’t yet been posted. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at the John Jay Educational Campus auditorium, 237 7th Ave. 

On Thursday evening, Pioneer Works hosts another free-with-RSVP panel on scientific controversies. The series, hosted by Astrophysicist Janna Levin, this month tackles the topic of genetic manipulation. She’ll be joined by George Church of Harvard and physician/biologist Siddhartha Mukherjee, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, "to discuss the stunning implications and potential disasters of a brave new genetically modified world."

March 12 is the Pioneer Works Second Sunday event, its monthly series of open studios, live music, and other events. There is a $10 suggested donation for entry. 

The city just launched the "most comprehensive dataset of public and private facilities and program sites that shape the quality of New York City neighborhoods.” You can drill down to the "Carroll Gardens - Columbia Street - Red Hook” neighborhoods here.

The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition has just opened a "Richard Hofmann Retrospective.” It’s open on weekends through April 9, noon to 4 p.m. 

Also new in the neighborhood: "Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez: Cornucopia" just opened at Kentler International Drawing Space.
