MTA Approves Expansion of Q52 Bus Route Further East on Rockaway Peninsula

By Katie Honan | February 8, 2017 3:08pm

EDGEMERE — The MTA approved a plan to extend the Q52 bus further east along the Rockaway peninsula, offering more connections to mainland Queens.

The route, which currently travels between Elmhurst and Beach 69th Street in Arverne, will now go further — to Beach 54th Street and Beach Channel Drive, an extension that was pushed for by residents and elected officials.

The route change is set to begin in April, according to an MTA spokesman.

Approximately 5,600 customers take the Q52 every day, connecting to subway stations in Woodhaven, Ozone Park and Rego Park, in addition to the Grand Avenue R train station at the route's end.

The bus is also a vital connection to the Queens Center Mall.

“By extending the Q52, we are offering thousands of additional customers a one-seat ride and a more seamless connection to northern and central Queens,” New York City Transit's Acting President Darryl Irick said in a press release.

The new route will add stops in both directions at Beach 59th Street and Arverne Boulevard, and Beach 54th Street and Beach Channel Drive. Stops at Beach 69th Street, currently where the Q52 terminates, will be relocated to Beach 67th Street.

The expansion will happen before the start of Select Bus Service begins later this year along the route, and is estimated to cost more than $500,000 each year.
