BROOKLYN — A Brownsville mom who admitted to beating her 4-year-old son with a broom handle and then leaving him alone in a bin filled with water before he died will undergo a psychiatric evaluation, officials said.

Zarah Coombs, 26, was arrested on murder charges Thursday, a day after she fatally beat Zamair Coombs in their home Riverdale Avenue near Amboy Street, police said.

Coombs also faces charges of manslaughter, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal possession of a weapon, prosecutors said.

She told investigators that she beat the boy with a broom handle and then left him unattended in a plastic storage bin filled with water, prosecutors said.

Zamair was pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital Thursday, police said. The cause of death was blunt force injuries, the city's medical examiner said.

Coombs, who is currently being held at Rikers Island without bail, is due back in court on Feb. 24, according to record and prosecutors.

The Administration for Children's Services and the Department of Investigation are also investigating Zamair's death, officials said.
