Tenants Arrested for Assaulting Landlord Collecting Rent in Crown Heights

CROWN HEIGHTS — Two tenants in a President Street apartment building were arrested after they attacked their landlord as she tried to collect rent, police said.

Wendell Brown, 35, and Sharonda Cross-Hope, 22, have been charged with assault, menacing and harassment for attacking their 66-year-old landlord Dec. 7, according to police and court records.

The victim told police she went to collect rent from the pair inside the President Street building near Utica Avenue in Crown Heights at 11:45 a.m., but they refused to pay her. The group got into an argument, then the two tenants attacked the woman, police said. Brown punched the 66-year-old and put his arm around her neck, court documents said, while Cross-Hope twisted her arm.

The landlord had bruising on her body and neck and shoulder pain, prosecutors said. She took a cab to Kingsbrook Jewish Hospital for treatment, police said.

Both Brown and Cross-Hope were arrested Dec. 10. Each was released from custody with temporary orders of protection for the landlord, court records say. Their public attorneys could not be reached for comment. Both are due back in court on Feb. 23.

The above incident is part of DNAinfo’s weekly crime blotter made from reports to the 71st Precinct in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, Crown Heights and East Flatbush.
