CROWN HEIGHTS — A 34-year-old Crown Heights man has been sentenced to 55 years to life in prison for committing two armed robberies, one of which seriously injured a 19-year-old woman he shot when she wouldn’t hand over cash.

Jovan Frederick was on parole in February 2015 when he robbed two people at gunpoint in the neighborhood, first going after a 37-year-old man on Maple Street and Kingston Avenue who he shot at during a mugging around 1:45 a.m.

Two days later, he approached the 19-year-old woman as she picked up her mail inside her Maple Street home, then shot her in the abdomen and chest when she told him she had no money.

He was arrested a week after the muggings and convicted of attempted murder and multiple charges of robbery in August, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office.

Prosecutors said officers responding to Frederick's home after the crimes recovered a handgun used in both muggings that had DNA on it that matched him.

He was sentenced to 55 years to life in Brooklyn Supreme Court on Wednesday.

“This defendant displayed a callous disregard for human life by robbing and shooting innocent victims,” said acting district attorney Eric Gonzalez. “With today’s sentence a clearly dangerous and violent felon will spend many years behind bars where he won’t be able to hurt or terrorize innocent people.”
