CARROLL GARDENS — P.S. 58 will start the school year with two of its three pre-K classes at an annex location on Union Street, school officials said.

As city public schools are set to reopen Thursday morning, P.S. 58 will officially open its new off-site location at 131 Union St. near Columbia Street. The third pre-K class will remain at the school's Carroll Gardens building at 330 Smith St., the Department of Education said Tuesday.

Overcrowding in the popular school's main building pushed school officials to either eliminate or move the pre-K program "to meet the needs of our growing community," Principal Katie Dello Stritto said in a letter last year.

But after the DOE identified the Union Street building, P.S. 58 was able to retain the program. The additional space will likely be used to expand the school's upper classes, Dello Stritto, who confirmed the annex's opening, said earlier this year.

P.S. 58 will have a total of 54 pre-K seats for the 2016-2017 school year, the DOE said.

“There is a free, full-day, high-quality pre-K seat for every 4-year-old in the city, and we’ll continue to support families in finding a seat that’s the best fit for them," DOE spokesman Will Mantell said in a statement.
