COBBLE HILL — A 70-year-old man walking across the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Clinton Street was hit and killed Sunday night, police said.
The victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was crossing the street just before 10 p.m. Sunday when he was hit by a driver heading eastbound on Atlantic Avenue, police said. He was taken to Brooklyn Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was not immediately charged, police said. The NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad was investigating, police said.
Investigators gave the driver a breathalyzer and a drug test at the crash scene and made him walk a straight line — and found the driver had no drugs or alcohol in his system, sources said.
It appeared the victim was crossing against the signal when he was hit, police said.
This isn't the first fatal crash at the intersection.
Muyassar Moustapha, who owned the Oriental Pastry & Grocery near the crash site, was walking south across Atlantic Avenue near Clinton Street at 8:24 p.m. on Aug. 9 when he was hit and killed by a man driving a Mercedes Benz east on Atlantic, police said at the time.
The intersection falls within an 8-mile corridor of Atlantic Avenue that saw 25 fatalities, including 13 pedestrians, between 2008 and 2012 — prompting Mayor Bill de Blasio to include it as part of one of his first Vision Zero initiatives to reduce pedestrian fatalities. It was designated an Arterial Slow Zone in April 2014 to tamp down on speeding.
