COBBLE HILL — A 66-year-old man was hit and killed by the driver of a Mercedes Benz while crossing Atlantic Avenue on Sunday night, police said.

Muyassar Moustapha was walking south across Atlantic Avenue near Clinton Street at 8:24 p.m. when he was hit by a man driving a 2008 Mercedes-Benz C300 east on Atlantic Avenue, officials said.

The victim was rushed to Brooklyn Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

The 26-year-old driver of the car remained on the scene, and the investigation is ongoing by the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad, police said.

The victim had owned Oriental Pastry and Grocery just down the block from where he was killed, according to the New York Daily News. He had just bought a tub of ice cream, reports said.

That stretch of Atlantic Avenue was a key part of the mayor's initial Vision Zero program to reduce pedestrian fatalities. In April 2014 it was designated an Arterial Slow Zone with the goal of reducing speeding along an eight-mile corridor of Atlantic Avenue that had seen 25 fatalities, including 13 pedestrians, between 2008 and 2012.
