Here's Your Red Hook Summer Guide to Music, Theater and Dance

Red Hook's thriving arts scene is ready for the summer.

Musicians, dancers and performers will converge in the neighborhood for a host of festivals, including SummerStage's Coffey Park concerts, the 23rd annual Red Hook Fest and a popular jazz series in a nearby community garden.

Here is DNAinfo's guide to the upcoming events this summer:

Movies

► Red Hook Flicks

Where: Valentino Park
When: Tuesday evenings from July 12 to August 8

The neighborhood's summer outdoor movie series will be back at Valentino Park this year. This year's schedule includes "Purple Rain," "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pitch Perfect." Previous screenings have included snacks and beverages from local eateries such as Hometown BBQ and Red Hook Lobster Pound.

Street Fairs

Red Hook Walks

Where: Van Brunt Street

When: July 16; 2 to 8 p.m.

Red Hook's very own street fair is back on Van Brunt Street for its second year with live music, outdoor drinking, food and sports. Two stages for musical performances will be hosted by Jalopy Theatre and School of Music as well as Sunny's Bar. There will also be basketball and volleyball games, yoga and Pilates classes, and food and drink from local eateries, some of which will host sidewalk cafes for the day.

Theater

► The Sandy Monologues

Where: P.S. 15 The Patrick F. Daly School, 71 Sullivan St. 
When: June 3 to June 5; June 10 to June 12

Red Hook was no stranger to the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 after severe flooding led to damaged homes and businesses. Falconworks Theater Company will perform "The Sandy Monologues" this month, an original show that delves into issues of race and class using stories of those who survived the deadly storm. The performance will incorporate spoken word, song and movement. Admission is free but theatergoers are encouraged to make a donation of $25.

Music and Dance

SummerStage

Where: Coffey Park, bound by King, Dwight, Richards and Verona streets
When: June 14 to June 19

Indie bands, hip-hop artists and pop performers will head to Red Hook in mid-June for SummerStage's events in Coffey Park. SummerStage is a free performing arts festival from the City Parks Foundation that organizes concerts across the city. This year's concerts in Red Hook include performances from pop duo Chairlift, Just Blaze and Friends, Blonde Redhead and a master class with professional choreographer Calvin Wiley. [Note: SummerStage events were originally planned for Red Hook Park but have been moved to Coffey Park.]

Red Hook Fest

Where: Various locations
When: June 9 to June 11

Now in its 23rd year, Dance Theater Etcetera's Red Hook Fest is slated to kick off June 9 with a happy hour, followed by a DJ dance party and community cookout June 10. The main stage performances at Valentino Pier will take place June 11 from noon to 7 p.m. (A rain date is set for June 12.) Performers will include Meta and the Cornerstones lead by Senagalese singer Meta Dia and professional dancer Francine E. Ott.

Ragas Live Festival

Where: Pioneer Works, 159 Pioneer St. 
When: June 23 and June 24

Based in a former manufacturing warehouse, Red Hook's Pioneer Works, a center for art, performance, science and research, has been honoring Indian classical music all year. After a months-long residency with Brooklyn Raga Massive, Pioneer Works is back with the 2016 Ragas Live Festival, which will feature more than 70 musicians for a 24-hour cycle. Artists include Karsh Kale and Pandit Krishna Bhatt. Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door. The doors open at 11:30 a.m.

9th Annual Red Hook Jazz Festival

Where: Urban Meadow, President and Van Brunt streets
When: June 12 and June 19

The popular jazz festival is back at a local community garden for its ninth year. Performances are split between two consecutive Sundays on June 12 and June 19 from 1 to 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 and admission is free for kids. For a full lineup of musicians for Day 1 and Day 2, click the links.
