Be happy it wasn't spandex.
After being spotted sporting cargo shorts during his morning exercise routine Friday, Mayor Bill de Blasio later defended his fashion choice as practical at an unrelated press conference.
"They’re comfortable. You can put stuff in your pockets," de Blasio said. "Style? No, not my goal."
The question of the mayor's workout wear arose after an activist pushing for the closure of Rikers Island confronted hizzoner inside the Park Slope YMCA Friday morning in an exchange that was caught on video.
In the clip, de Blasio can be seen speaking to the demonstrator while stretching out on all four before a security guard swoops in and escorts the man out.
Social media users immediately seized on the mayor's curious sartorial selection.
His gym gear could use a bit of an upgrade. He's dressed like a camp counselor. https://t.co/fkSynbR72W

The mayor reverse-commutes ten miles through traffic to go to a specific gym, but dresses to weed the garden. https://t.co/SGCp3tRpNM
