NEW YORK CITY — The MTA is making weekend trips to Rockaway and Orchard Beaches easier this summer.

The transit agency is extending Rockaway Park shuttle service — which usually runs between Rockaway Park-Beach 116th Street and Broad Channel — to the Rockaway Boulevard station on the A line from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends as of June 12, it announced Thursday.

The service change will double straphangers' beach access, giving them the option of taking either Lefferts Blvd or Far Rockaway A train.

It will stay in effect until New York City public beaches close for the season, on or shortly after Labor Day.

The MTA will also dispatch a greater number of buses the Q53 route between the Brooklyn College-Flatbush Av. 2/5 station and Rockaway Park on Saturdays and Sundays, as of July 3. Buses will arrive at a given stop every 7 and a half minutes instead of every 10 to 11 minutes.

In the Bronx, the MTA is extending Bx12 service between Sedgwick Avenue and Pelham Bay to Orchard Beach from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends. The augmented service begins Saturday.
