TOTTENVILLE — The city will give out free 60-gallon rain barrels to up to 200 Staten Island homeowners on Saturday.

The Department of Environmental Protection and Rep. Dan Donovan will distribute the barrels at the Friendship Club parking lot, on the grounds of Mount Loretto at 6581 Hylan Blvd., to homeowners who pre-register for the giveaway.

"A rain barrel will save you money, help conserve water and come in handy if you ever travel to a deserted island," Donovan said in a statement.

"Thank you to the NYC Department of Environmental Protection for providing rain barrels at no cost to Staten Islanders."

The barrels can be installed at a home to collect and store stormwater from the roof and potentially save up to 40 percent on a person's water bills, the DEP said.

People who want a rain barrel can RSVP to Donovan's office by calling 718-351-1062. The giveaway will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
