BROOKLYN — A man who wore an American flag bandana when he randomly slashed a woman across the face earlier this month in Prospect Park South now faces hate crime charges, police said.

Gregory Alfred, 25, attacked the 53-year-old woman from behind, slashing her jaw line with a black-handled kitchen knife in broad daylight on Beverly Road near Argyle Road on March 10, NYPD officials said.

The victim, whose identity was not released, was treated at Maimonidies Medical Center for minor injuries, police said.

Alfred, who made anti-white statements, told investigators he slashed the woman because she is white, the NYPD spokeswoman said.

He dropped his knife and bandana while fleeing the scene, police said.

Alfred was arrested at a relative's home in Sayerville, New Jersey, on Saturday, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

He waived extradition and was transferred into NYPD custody Tuesday, the spokeswoman said.

He was charged Tuesday with attempted murder as a hate crime, assault as a hate crime and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
