QUEENS — Crew members on a fishing boat that ran aground in Far Rockaway were air rescued by the Coast Guard early Thursday after a rescue boat capsized, officials said.

The seven mariners were aboard a 76-foot scallop fishing vessel when it struck ground near Beach 56th Street about 2 a.m., the Coast Guard said.

A boat was sent to help, but that 25-foot vessel capsized amid 10- to 12-foot waves. The crew members swam to shore safely, officials said.

A Coast Guard chopper then responded and lifted the members of the fishing boat, the Carolina Queen III, to safety.

None of the fishermen were injured.

Plans were in the works to remove the two boats from the water Thursday, officials said.
