KIPS BAY — Police used debris left at the scene of a crash to track down a driver they say fatally struck a pedestrian on the FDR Drive and fled last week.

Mirsad Dzaferovic, of Astoria, drove off without calling 911 after mowing down a 29-year-old man who was either standing in the road or trying to cross it near East 28th Street at 12:35 a.m. on Jan. 8, police said.

The victim, Anthony Pham of San Francisco, was taken to Bellevue Hospital with severe head trauma. He was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m. the same day, police said.

Investigators tracked down the driver by linking serial numbers and the paint color on car debris found at the scene of the crash to a 2011 Toyota Camry registered to Dzaferovic, according to authorities.

Police arrested him on Jan. 9, according to a criminal complaint.

Prosecutors charged Dzaferovic with leaving the scene of an accident, a felony, and a judge released him without bail pending his next court date on March 1, court records show.

A lawyer for Dzaferovic did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
