ELMHURST — Fewer new chain shops opened this year in Queens, but the national stores still reign over the retail landscape, according to an annual report.

Only 14 new chain stores opened in 2015, bringing the total to 1,749 — a spike of 0.8 percent, according to the "State of the Chains" study released by the Center for an Urban Future.

In the last two years, that number was 5.3 percent, the study shows.

Queens has the second highest number of chain stores, behind Manhattan, with Dunkin' Donuts at the top of the list throughout the city.

The coffee and donut empire added 10 more in Queens this year, bringing their total to 171.

T-Mobile opened 12 new stores in Queens in 2015, bringing their total to 61. Sprint also expanded, opening nine new stores, and GNC opened six.

The borough lost a number of stores, though, including 12 Radio Shacks and three Golden Krust shops.

The highest percentage of chain stores is in Elmhurst, home of the Queens Center Mall, with 137 chain stores. That number was down four percent from 2014, according to the report.

And while it may feel like you can't turn down a street in Queens without finding a chain store, there are two zip codes that don't have any: 11697, which includes Breezy Point and Roxbury, and 11431, which includes parts of Jamaica.
