WAKEFIELD — A pregnant woman was stabbed to death and a newborn baby was hospitalized in a bizarre attack Friday afternoon, police and sources said.
The 22-year old woman was found inside a first floor apartment at 4450 Monticello Ave. between 241st Street and Nereid Avenue. When police and emergency workers arrived at 2:45 p.m., they discovered the newborn at the bloody scene.
The woman and the child were taken to Our Lady of Mercy Hospital where the woman was pronounced dead, police said.
Another 22-year-old woman, who was not immediately identified, was taken in the custody.
During questioning by police, she claimed she was the child's mother and the incident caused her go to into labor, according to sources.
Investigators initially believed the dead woman was the child's mother, sources said. A man, who claims to be the child's father, gave conflicting accounts about who the mother was, sources said.
Medical testing will be conducted to determine the baby's mother, a source said.
City Councilman Andy King, who had been briefed by investigators, told reporters that the baby had been cut from the dead woman, the New York Times reported.
A knife was found at the bloody scene, said King, who added that police were investigating whether the woman was trying to take the baby from the pregnant woman, according to the Times.
It was not immediately clear how the 22-year-old suspect was connected to the victim.
The incident began some time after 2:21 p.m., when a 911 calls was placed from the home by a male caller who said his brother's "baby mother" had just given birth and was stabbed several times, sources said.
When the dispatcher began asking questions, the caller refused to answer and then hung up, sources said.
A second 911 call came in shortly after the first, in which a male caller said that guns had been involved in the attack, which police suspect was an attempt to speed up emergency workers' arrival.
911 dispatchers got a third call soon after, in which a male caller claimed he had just gotten to the apartment with his brother and found the grisly scene.
Charges are pending against the suspect, police said. It was not immediately clear whether anyone else was being sought in connection to the incident.
