PROSPECT-LEFFERTS GARDENS — Local police are warning residents to watch out for car break-ins this week after receiving 10 burglary reports in one night in the neighborhood.

Police in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens said they’re investigating the separate car break-ins that happened Sunday night into Monday morning in the area, particularly around the intersection of Parkside and Nostrand avenues.

The 71st Precinct sent out an alert about the rash of burglaries Monday afternoon, warning car owners in the area to “not leave valuables in plain sight,” including GPS devices, clothing, shopping bags and even phone chargers and coins.

Though the NYPD does not track car break-ins specifically, burglaries in general are up in the 71st Precinct this year over last. In 2015, the precinct has seen 170 reported burglaries so far, up 16.4 percent over the 146 burglaries reported in the same time period in 2014, according to the most recently available department statistics.

However, grand larcenies (defined as thefts of property worth $1,000 or more) are down slightly in the precinct, from 433 incidents in 2014 to 408 incidents year to date in 2015, a 5.8 percent drop, crime data shows.
