Frank Stella Retrospective Opens at the Whitney

Where: The Whitney Museum, 99 Gansevoort St., Meatpacking District
When: Museum is open from 10:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and until 6 p.m. on Sunday

The Whitney’s latest exhibit is the most expansive Frank Stella career retrospective ever in the United States. It includes sculptures, paintings, prints and reliefs, as well as drawings and mock-ups that show Stella’s artistic process. Two of the artist’s sculptures are on display on the museum’s fifth-floor outdoor balcony gallery.

 

Friday, Oct. 30

Halloween Dance Party

Where: (le poisson rouge), 158 Bleecker St., Greenwich Village    
When: Doors open at 6 p.m., show starts at 6:30 p.m.

(le poisson rouge) is hosting a Halloween dance party featuring Australian electro-pop foursome Strange Talk, with performances by fellow Aussies Intergalactix, whose bubbly space-pop sound is reminiscent of Phoenix and Cut Copy, and New York City's own GERMANS, described by le poisson as “moody disco pop about breaking up, making up and feeling good about feeling bad." Attendees must be 18 or older and the show is general admission, standing (or dancing) room only. Tickets are $13 in advance, $15 at the door.

Halloween Market at Chelsea Market

Where: Chelsea Market at Ninth Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets, Chelsea
When: Noon to 5:00 p.m.

Chelsea Market celebrates Halloween on Friday with pumpkin carving, sweet treats, live entertainment and spooky decorations.

Candlelit Tour and Paranormal Investigation

Where: Dyckman Farmhouse Museum, 4881 Broadway, Inwood
When: 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. 

Join the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum and long-time Inwood resident and paranormal investigator John Galvin for the first-ever ghost hunt in Manhattan’s oldest farmhouse. The event is free, but registration is required. It’s recommended for adults and children over 12.   

5th Annual Asphalt Screams

Where: Asphalt Green campuses: East 90th Street at York Avenue, Upper East Side and at the corner North End Avenue at Murray Street, Battery Park City
When: 4 to 6 p.m.

Families are invited to trick-or-treat or participate in Halloween-themed games like a “Spooktacular Soccer Shootout” and wander around in a haunted maze at Asphalt Green’s “Asphalt Screams” event. Wear your Halloween costume and arrive early because the first 500 kids at the event will receive a goody bag. The event is free, but there is a suggested donation of $20 per family. RSVP online.

Stuy Town Ice Rink Grand Opening

Where: Playground 10, Stuyvesant Town
When: 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village ice rink is opening for the season, and guests who arrive in costume will get free entry.

 

Saturday, Oct. 31

NYC Velo Halloween Adventure Ride

Where: Starts at NYC Velo at 590 W. 45th St. finishes in Peekskill, NY. 
When: 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

A pack of bicycle riders will head north along the Hudson together on Saturday morning, hitting as many unpaved trails as they can. The 60-mile ride will end in Peekskill where riders can take the train back to the city.

Pierogi Tasting Day

Where: East Village Meat Market, 139 Second Ave., East Village
When: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Area pierogi purveyors Veselka, Rosa-Ly Pierogi, Streecha Ukranian Kitchen and Hunter Cultural Center give out free samples of the Eastern European dumpling, with varieties ranging from sauerkraut and potato to pumpkin, short rib and buckwheat. Pierogis will also be available for sale.

Stacie Joy

Where: 65 Jumel Terrace at 160th St., Washington Heights
When: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Join several of Washington Heights finest artists, musicians and restaurants for a day of dancing, craft and tastings. Singer and actor, Leslie Odom Jr. of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit musical Hamilton, is headlining the event. Other performances include the Underworld Productions Opera, flutist KAT Modiano, the Gardener Trio, Bobby Gonzalez, Mariache Flor de Toloache, and Bill Popp. The event is free and no registration is required.

Bull Moose Dog Run Howl-o-ween Parade

Where: Bull Moose Dog Run, inside Theodore Roosevelt Park, next to AMNH
When: 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. 

Dress your pup in a cute, spooky or festive costume for the annual Halloween parade at the dog run. The event is free to all and there will be costume contests. It’s an opportunity to hang out and meet fellow dog people, the organizers said.

Roosevelt Island Halloween Parade

Where: Starts at Blackwell House, 503 Main St., Roosevelt Island
When: 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The Halloween parade begins at Blackwell Park and turns down Main Street with a celebration at Capobianco Field, including music, games, rides, snacks, prizes and giveaways.

Village Halloween Parade    

Where: Costumed participants gather at Sixth Avenue at Canal Street, observers can line up anywhere along Sixth Avenue from Spring Street to 16th Street
When: The parade starts at 7 p.m. and typically runs until about 10 or 11 p.m.

Arguably the city’s most popular Halloween celebration, the Village parade is in its 42nd year and shows no sign of slowing down. This year’s grand marshal leading the parade will be that bearded guy from the Dos Equis beer commercials.

“The Doctor is IN… SANE!”

Where: Exit 9 Gift Emporium, Avenue A near East Fourth Street, East Village
When: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The local gift shop will put on a live horror show in its store window, complete with blood, guts and candy for the audience.

Carnegie Hill Neighbors Halloween Spooktacular

Where: 92nd Street, between Park and Madison Avenues, Carnegie Hill
When: 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Enjoy a block party with snacks, games, a costume contest and parade with Carnegie Hill Neighbors on 92nd Street, between Park and Madison avenues. Contest categories include best costumes for various age brackets, best family costume, best pet costume and best decorated townhouse and storefront in Carnegie Hill. Admission is $3 for children, $5 per adults or $10 per family.
 

Sunday, Nov. 1

New York City Marathon Cheering Station in Harlem

Where: Fifth Avenue and 137th Street, Harlem
When: 11 a.m. and after party at 3 p.m.

Party under a tent with a live DJ and food as you cheer on people running the New York City Marathon. The local running group, Harlem Run, wants those competing in the marathon to know that Harlem throws the biggest party in the city.

Revealing Riis, Family Photo Day

Where: Museum of the City of New York, 1220 5th Ave. at 103rd Street, Upper East Side
When: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Visit a new exhibit about Jacob Riis, a photojournalist who revealed the harsh living conditions that thousands of immigrants lived in New York City tenements. Afterwards visit an interactive station where you can stage a photo that reveals something you would like to change.
