Shine the Light in Harlem: Domestic Violence Awareness Walk and Speak Out

Where: March starts at 116th Street and Saint Nicholas Avenue, Central Harlem
When: 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Wear purple and support survivors of domestic violence in Harlem with a march through the neighborhood and a speak out in front of the State Office Building on 125th Street and Seventh Avenue.

Bill Nye the Science Guy and theoretical physicist Lisa Randall discuss dark matter

Where: 92nd Street Y, Lexington Avenue and East 92nd Street, Upper East Side
When: 7:30 p.m.

Bill Nye and Lisa Randall discuss dark matter and how it interacts with matter on earth in preview of Randall’s new book “Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs.” Tickets are $40.

La MaMa Galleria Presents ‘Star Maps’

Where: La MaMa Galleria, 47 Great Jones St., NoHo
When: 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The paintings in New York-based artist Brad Greenwood’s second solo show at La MaMa re-imagine the constellations as cultural icons from Disney movies to the Land o’ Lakes maiden to the works of Boticelli and Lichtenstein. The paintings were inspired by the story of how the Los Angeles blackout caused by the 1994 Northridge earthquake prompted hundreds of frantic 911 calls from city residents who had never seen the stars reporting “strange activity in the sky.”

Educator Open House

Where: El Museo Del Barrio, 1230 5th Ave. at 105th St., East Harlem
When: 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

A free workshop for teachers to learn how to incorporate the museum's resources into their classrooms. The night includes a look at the current Young Lords exhibit and information about fall programs like the Three Kings Day parade. The event is free but reservations are required.

Halloween Family Fun

Where: Voelker Orth Museum, 149-19 38th Ave., Flushing
When: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Bring your family to this Halloween evening full of spooky fun for young kids. There will be crafts, stories and treats. Costumes are encouraged. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is $3 (free for infants).

Tenement Talks: Hot Bread Kitchen

Where: Lower East Side Tenement Museum, 103 Orchard St., Lower East Side
When: Doors open at 6 p.m., talk begins at 6:30 p.m.

WNYC’s Leonard Lopate will interview Hot Bread Kitchen founder Jessamyn W. Rodriguez about her new cookbook, which includes recipes for authentic multi-ethnic breads like the ones the sold at stores across the region and city greenmarkets. Copies of the cookbook will also be available for a 15 percent discount.

Republican Debate Watch Party   

Where: Q.E.D. Astoria, 27-16 23rd Ave., Astoria
When: 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Watch the Republican debate as a panel of comedians — including Frank Conniff from "Mystery Science Theater 3000" — provide funny commentary. Food and drink will also be available. Tickets are $8.

Murray Hill Neighborhood Association Architectural Preservation Awards

Where: Scandinavia House, Volvo Hall, 58 Park Ave. (between 37th and 38th Streets), Midtown East
When: 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Preservation and Design Committee of the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association will present awards to building owners in the neighborhood who have contributed to the neighborhood’s unique history and character.

Ghost Stories Halloween Party at Greenlight Books

Where: 686 Fulton St. in Fort Greene
When: 7:30 p.m.

Author Audrey Niffenegger hosts a reading from her ghost story anthology, "Ghostly," which features centuries-old Gothic Horror and Victorian stories as well as new ones. Refreshments will be served and guests are invited to come in costume. Check out other spooky events in the neighborhood here.

Wine Pairing Event With Sage General Store

Where: SquareWine and Spirits, 24-20 Jackson Ave. Long Island City
When: 7:30 p.m.

SquareWine and Spirits will be pairing some of their best wines with food from local eatery Sage General Store, and dessert from Bonne Fette Baking. Tickets to the four-course meal cost $46.45 and can be purchased here.
