DUMBO — One night a year, Brooklyn tries to be as scary as possible.

Free Halloween activities for kids and adults abound around downtown Brooklyn, from readings to dance parties to spooky shows.

Here's what's going on in the neighborhood for Halloween:

Ghost Stories Halloween Party at Greenlight Books

When: Thursday, Oct. 29, 7:30 p.m.
Where: 686 Fulton St. in Fort Greene

Author Audrey Niffenegger hosts a reading from her ghost story anthology, "Ghostly," which features centuries-old Gothic Horror and Victorian stories as well as new ones. Refreshments will be served and guests are invited to come in costume.

►Open Mic Night at Brooklyn Community Pride Center

When: Friday, Oct. 30, 5 p.m.
Where: 4 Metrotech Center

The Halloween open mic night at the Brooklyn's LGBT center is open to all — one need not be musically inclined or a poet to share, according to the event's Facebook page.

►DUMBO Activities Under the Archway

When: Saturday, Oct. 31, 4 to 10 p.m.
Where: Archway under the Manhattan Bridge, 50 Adams St., DUMBO

The DUMBO Business Improvement District sponsors kids trick-or-treating from 4 to 7 p.m. Children in costume should stop into shops with official “Welcome Trick-or-Treaters” signs in their windows.

Between 5 and 7 p.m. in the archway under the Manhattan bridge, at Adams and Water streets, there will be a costume contest, arts and crafts, a photo booth and hot chocolate served. From 7 to 10 p.m., a DJ dance party with beer and wine will cater to adult trick-or-treaters.

►Clinton Avenue Trick-or-Treating and "Halloween 313"

When: Saturday, Oct. 31, 5 to 9 p.m.
Where: 313 Clinton Ave., Clinton Hill

A free, spooky extravaganza of a show outside 313 Clinton Ave., Halloween 313 draws thousands of visitors every year. This year's show is called "Malice in Underland." The Society for Clinton Hill organizes a concurrent Halloween walk on the block, which will be closed to traffic.

The 17th Annual Great PUPkin Dog Costume Contest

When: Saturday, Oct. 31, 11 a.m.
Where: Fort Greene Park, Fort Greene

Dogs will be in costume at this canine carnival in Fort Greene Park. Last year, judges saw 124 pups, and a dog dressed as public radio host Ira Glass won first place.
