MAP: P.S. 289 Grabs Top English Test Ranking in Brooklyn's District 17

CROWN HEIGHTS — Of the 22 elementary schools in Brooklyn's District 17, P.S. 289 George V. Brower had the highest percentage of fourth graders pass the state’s English Language Arts exam this year, according to analysis of the 2015 test results by DNAinfo New York.

The Crown Heights school, located next to Brower Park, had 54 percent of its fourth graders pass the test this year, ranking it 104th in city for ELA, up from 241st place last year.

The school’s ELA score outranked all others in the area, including two nearby schools with gifted and talented programs, P.S 161 The Crown and P.S. 316 Elijah Stroud, where 26.8 percent and 20.5 percent of fourth graders passed the ELA test, respectively.

P.S. 289 did not, however, take the top spot in the district for fourth grade math scores. That designation went to P.S. 249 The Caton, located south of Prospect Park on Caton Avenue and Marlborough Road. More than 70 percent of students there passed this year’s statewide math test, the 72nd best passing rate in the city.

Test results in District 17 varied widely among the area's elementary schools, with some pass rates dipping into the single digits, like at the P.S. 375 Jackie Robinson where only 3.4 percent of students passed the ELA test this year and at P.S. 770 New American Academy where only 8.8 percent of students passed in math, the results show.

The following map from DNAinfo New York shows how schools in Crown Heights, Prospect-Lefferts Gardens and East Flatbush stack up to other schools citywide. Click on District 17 below to see how your child’s school performed on this year’s state tests:
