Melinda Katz may have been elected Borough President to deal with Queens’ development and budget. But this Sunday she wants to surprise her constituents with her lesser known skill — a talent for singing.
Katz will join the Queens Symphony Orchestra during its preformance at Forest Park to sing two Broadway classics: “On My Own” from Les Misérables and “If I Were a Bell” from Guys and Dolls, her office said.
Katz grew up surrounded by music and arts. Her late father, David Katz, a Juilliard alumnus, founded the Queens Symphony Orchestra in 1953. Her mother, Jeanne Dale, a singer in the U.S.O., founded the Queens Council of the Arts in 1966.
The Queens Borough President often sings during various community functions. At a recent National Night Out Against Crime event in Forest Hills, she sang “God Bless America.”
Some took to Twitter to challenge other Borough Presidents to show off their talents next.
Queens BP @MelindaKatz will sing Broadway classics at a free concert. Your move, @HeyNowJO, @rubendiazjr, @galeabrewer, @BPEricAdams.
