THE BRONX — An off-duty NYPD officer was heading to work when a youth slugged her in the face and stole her gun in Wakefield Wednesday morning, police said.

The 41-year-old officer, whose name was not immediately released, was walking to her car in a parking garage near Bronx Boulevard and East 226th Street about 5:30 a.m. when Samuel Thorton, 21, snatched a gold chain from her neck and demanded her wallet, NYPD officials said.

She reached into her bag to grab her service weapon inside but Thorton grabbed the bag and tried to pry it away from her, sources said.

Thorton, who is about 6 feet tall and 150 pounds, then punched her in the face, knocking her to the ground, police said.

He then snatched the officer's gun and ran off, police said.

Thorton, who wore a tank top with dark pants and a watch on his left wrist, had not been arrested as of Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The officer was treated for a bloody nose at Montefiore Medical Center. It wasn't immediately clear if the gun was her service weapon, an NYPD spokesman said.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
