NYU Faculty Are Doing An Embarrassing and Cute Thing For Graduates

By Danielle Tcholakian | May 18, 2015 4:10pm | Updated on May 19, 2015 7:45am

As Emilio Estevez once said: "We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all." *

A group of devoted New York University faculty will exemplify this classic "Breakfast Club" quote at the school's graduation ceremony on Wednesday — 30 years after the movie's release — with a videotaped performance of the film's theme song, Simple Minds' "Don't You Forget About Me."

It's going to be really hard to forget them after watching this.

Especially when it plays on the Yankee Stadium Jumbotron.

It is deeply cringe-inducing.

But also pretty sweet. This must be what you get when you pay one of the highest college tuitions in the country: Teachers willing to embarrass themselves for you on the Yankee Stadium Jumbotron.

NYU spokesman James Devitt provided an explanation for the video in an email:

"NYU faculty (some of whom were teenagers when the movie opened) have now helped revive Hughes' work — but with a different purpose: to congratulate NYU graduates. I suspect you'll find the dual tribute (to NYU students and to "The Breakfast Club") both amusing and touching — some of the participants are undoubtedly out of their element here, but took the time to step outside of their labs, lecture halls, and libraries to show this year's graduates they won't be forgotten."

*Other applicable "Breakfast Club" quotes to follow up this video, in case any graduation speakers are looking for inspiration:

"When you grow up, your heart dies." — weird kid Allison Reynolds, played by Ally Sheedy

"Spend a little more time trying to make something of yourself, and a little less time trying to impress people." — Principal Vernon, played by Paul Gleason
